In Japan, don’t expect an immediate
response to anything. Decisions
are usually made collectively,
and answers typically take much
longer than in western companies.
Once a decision is taken in
Japan, however, the machine
rolls forward smoothly and action
is speedy. In France, the quality
of a product and the persuasiveness
of an argument are far more
important than the setting of
deadlines.
In Arab countries, male business
travelers should not flirt
with local women. In Japan,
do not leave your chopsticks
standing upright in a bowl of
rice: this resembles a Buddhist
funerary custom. When in Russia,
don’t shake hands through a
doorway, light a cigarette from
a candle, bring an even number
of flowers, or whistle indoors.
Don’t boast about your past
when visiting California. Here,
your pedigree counts for less
than your next big idea. In
Hong Kong blinking at someone
is considered impolite. Many
Singaporeans interpret strong
eye contact as aggressive. In
meetings, expect to see downward
glances, especially from those
lower in status. Pounding one
fist into the palm of the other
hand is a gesture to avoid as
many people perceive it to be
obscene. And the “arms akimbo”
position – standing tall with
your hands on your hips – is
typically perceived as an angry
and aggressive posture.
